Fountainhead is a residential interior design and decoration project in New Farm, Brisbane, involving thoughtful modernisation to a colonial-style home. A contemporary rear extension opens the layout into a more functional spatial flow, connecting the kitchen, living and dining spaces. The interior blends curated furnishings, layered textures and natural materials to create a soft yet sophisticated sanctuary, one that marries historical character with a refined modern sensibility. The home is now clearly structured into three zones: a generous parental retreat, a central gathering space, and an upstairs level for the children.
Drawing on the leafy surrounds of New Farm, the palette introduces deep greens, earthy browns and warm neutrals to bring a sense of calm and permanence. Custom furniture, curated lighting and artisan pieces sit alongside a strong material mix of granite, travertine, brass, walnut, birch ply and limewash, adding depth, tactility and long-term durability. These elements work together to create a space that feels grounded, elegantly restrained and deeply connected to its context.
A modular On The Rocks sofa allows adaptable living and multiple orientations depending on connection, privacy or aspect. A fluted glass corner window references subtle Art Deco detailing, paired with a bespoke bar cabinet, refined brass shelving and considered joinery. The dining nook’s circular banquette offers an intimate space with a close visual relationship to the garden. Daniel Boddams’ M tables introduce sculptural geometry, complemented by Volker Haug’s cast aluminium lighting. A curved brass island panel, angled travertine bench and honed granite plinth contribute to the home’s understated sense of luxury.
The project draws inspiration from Ayn Rand’s Fountainhead, interpreting themes of architectural clarity and uncompromising intent. Contemporary planning and restrained decoration reframe these ideas into a timeless residential interior, one grounded in materiality, proportion and quiet confidence. While designed in Brisbane, the approach resonates equally with homes across the Gold Coast and Byron Bay seeking refined interiors rooted in craftsmanship, context and longevity.
