Office fitout interior design and for a flexible training and communal workspace encouraging collaboration and reinforcing brand identity.

Interior design for a commercial fitout can tread many different paths. Online accommodation facilitator Hotels.com came searching for a way to make their satellite training offices more engaging for staff while affirming the company’s purpose. Checking in to a hotel or turning up for workplace training had more in common than one might realise, because both involve a turnover of temporary visitors and spaces that constantly shift to suit their users. The design response reimagined the training offices as hotel lobbies, with reception areas and communal zones designed to welcome, transition and host.

Each satellite office or Lobby draws its interior direction from its locale, setting the tone for its material palette and furnishings. Finishes and furniture selections reflect the character of place, reinforcing the uniqueness of each location. This particular site required two training rooms with the flexibility to combine, a communal lounge, an office kitchenette suitable for catering, an admin office, a welcome desk and an interview room. Early in the design phase it was decided that the training rooms, communal space and kitchenette should support multiple modes of use, whether large, small, private or open, ensuring adaptability for varied training formats and everyday operation.

Lobby Australia draws inspiration from the Australian outback, intentionally contrasting its urban context. Dried riverbeds are reinterpreted through crazy-paved travertine scrap flooring that subtly guides movement through the space. A central water station with brass plate and red oxide basin nods to historic gold panning. The palette embraces a rugged luxe sensibility, with oxblood, ochre and russet energising the environment while oak and walnut veneers introduce warmth and calm. Streaked black render, referencing the trunks of grass trees, wraps internal columns, while the welcome desk paired with classic key boxes merges hotel familiarity with outback flavour.

The fitout demonstrates how a strong conceptual narrative can be embedded meaningfully into a commercial workplace interior. Strategic spatial planning and flexible furniture enable adaptability, while storytelling through texture and colour elevates brand identity and user experience. The design playfully gestures to the idea that the outback sits just beyond the city limits, bringing its presence into an unexpected context. Lobby Australia reflects a growing movement in experience-led commercial interior design, where workplace environments become more flexible, contextually aware and deeply human.
